Topic: The Use of the Period  ( Full Stop)

The Period (Full Stop) is used in several places.

1. The Period is used to End Complete Sentence.

Example.
1. Don't pick rare flowers like the lotus and wild orchid.
2. Yaaya killed the snake.

2. Abbreviations, Initials.
The Period is used after Abbreviations and Initials.
Example.....
Dr. F. E. Smart
D. C.
A. M. (or a.m.)

NOTE: Do not use a period after per cent or after a Roman numeral within a sentence.
Example.
Our honour students have an average of 85 per cent or higher.
The policies of King George II led to the rebellion of 1642.

In the abbreviations of the names of many well - known organisations, periods are not required : FBI, CBS, ALF, CIO, TV A, CIA.

Nouns are names of persons, animals, places, things, plants, activities, actions, occupations, months of the year, days of the week, names of Festivals, etc.

Example.
1. Person : Mensah, Isaac, Musah, Aminah, boy, girl, etc.
2. Animal : cat, mouse, fish, lion, zebra, horse, etc.
3. Places : school, church, hospital, park, zoo, mosque, kitchen, etc.
4. Things : pencil, eraser, chalk, book, desk, etc.

Simple Subject

The Simple Subject names the person, place, a thing spoken of. It answers the question "Who?" or "What?" before the verb.

Examples
1. Mike had a tub of lively fish in his room at college. (Who or What had? Mike had).

2. Is Kaneshie part of the 16 Regions of the Republic of Ghana. (Who or What is? Kanesgie is).

The Complete Subject is the simple subject with its modifiers.

Example.
1. The ruddy - cheeked boy dashed after his dog. ('The ruddy - cheeked' is the Complete Subject)

2. A sleek black cat crept stealthily along the fence. ('A sleek black cat' is a Complete Subject)

3. In the centre of the room burned a cheerful fire. ('Cheerful fire')
